Rockin The Funk Rock, a Natural Ammonia Bouncer

I have had some funky smells come out of my washer and dryer since I have moved across the country and went from moderate water to hard water. I have done everything to get the funky smell out of my diapers. I have tried some different cloth diaper safe and eco friendly options, but the smell would come right back each time. I had even gone as far as washing my diapers with a few tablespoons of bleach every other week just to get the funk out. So when I finally found an eco friendly solution to getting the funk out for good, I had mixed emotions from relief to doubt. I was afraid of getting my hopes up again just to find that ammonia smell back in my diapers.
I began testing funk rock by following the directions on the package and added 4 tablespoons to a tub full of hot water. I then soaked 17 "clean" smelly diapers in the bath tub for an hour. You can also let your diapers soak in your wash machine, sink, or water bucket (keep out of reach of children). But since I have a front loader machine and more then a few diapers, I felt that soaking them in the tub would be best. After an hour of soaking, I hand rinsed each insert and diaper shell under the bath tub faucet and then tossed them into the washer and washed them as I normally would with a 1 1/2 tablespoons of Rockin Green and did an extra rinse just incase. After the wash cycle was finished, I opened up the washing machine expecting the worst and to smell the ammonia or funky smell still, but they smelled like water! Clean water!! Still doubtful, I tossed them into the dryer and hung dried the shells on the line. After all 17 diapers where stuffed and put away, I began using them on my daughter. I can say that the funky ammonia smell has vanished from diapers with no trace of funk or ammonia and I have used all 17 and washed them since. I am very impressed with this product!! Rockin Green recommends that you use a tablespoon of Funk Rock in your pre wash or pre rinse cycle before using Rockin Green Laundry Detergent to keep the smells at bay.

Pros:
No more funky smells!
Softer and more fluffier diapers.
An Eco Friendly alternative to bleaching

Cons:
You have to use lots of water, so it can be time consuming to soak them in a bathtub.
Another product to buy to keep your diapers smelling good.

  24. I appreciate the "cons" section of your post. We have had nothing but trouble with our cloth diapers. I don't know if it's our washing machine, our water, my inability to figure out a wash routine that works...but it's at the point where I've spent a ton on diapers and detergents and my baby girl still wears sposies every day because of the smell and rashes she gets in her cloth. I desperately want to use my cloth, but I just haven't been able to bring myself to buy yet another laundry product. I appreciate your honesty about the product and I feel more likely to give it a try simply because the blog *isn't* all sunshine and rainbows about Funk Rock. It's realistic. Thanks!
