Eco Nuts are completely sustainable dried fruit shells that come from the Sapindus mukorossi tree in Nepal, India and Indonesia that have been used for centuries in India and China for laundering.

I had no clue what Eco Nuts were when I was first asked to review them by a good friend. I was very skeptical of this product. I mean, how can dried fruit shells clean your laundry?! Especially diapers?

I received a small box of these dried fruit shells in the mail a few days later that can wash 50 hot washes or 90 cold washes. The box was little bigger then a watch box. It came with 2 small cloth bags that hold your soap nuts in the wash cycle. 4-5 soap nuts can wash 5-7 washes on hot and up to 9 washes on cold. I wanted to know exactly how many times I could use the same 5 soap nuts before having to throw them out so I put new nuts in the bag and proceeded to wash a weeks worth of clothes like I normally do with a combination of hot, warm, and cold washes.

First up came a load of 12 Fuzzi Bunz, 4 prefolds, and a fitted. As soon as the load of diapers were finished, I ran into the laundry room and swung the wash machine's door open and grabbed the closest insert and took a deep inhale. NOTHING! It smelled like nothing! I couldn't believe it! I grabbed another insert, and another, and another! Still, they smelled clean! After carefully removing every diaper shell and insert and taking a deep inhale into every single one of them and not finding even the hint of ammonia or poo, I was sold on this fabulous product!

After the diapers, I washed a load of towels on hot/cold that consisted of 4 body towels, 2 hand towels, and 6 wash clothes. Next came a load of 6 pairs of jeans on cold/cold. Then a medium load of colors on warm/cold. After the load of colors came a smaller load of whites on warm/warm. Then I washed our king sized sheets on hot/cold. And finally I washed my husband's work uniforms that had a particular "boat smell" to them on cold/cold. EVERYTHING came out smelling fresh and clean including the boat smell uniform. If your husband is in the navy, you know exactly what I am talking about!

I was able to to wash 7 loads of laundry with the same Eco Nuts before having to replace the used soap nuts with fresh ones. Eco Nuts work best for small to medium loads of laundry with no major stains. The manufacturer says that it will not get stains out of your clothes. However, not one of my diaper shells or inserts had a stain on them when I pulled them out of the washer.

Some Pros to Eco Nuts:

-They are eco friendly with no additives or dies

-All of my clothes and diapers came out smelling fresh and clean

-I don't have to worry about detergent build-up.

Cons to Eco Nuts:

-They cannot clean large loads of clothes

-They seemed to work better in hot or warm water vs. cold water.

I recommend this product to anyone who has sensitive skin, hard water, and someone who is looking for a completely eco friendly detergent.

  26. Great review! Good to know about the efficacy of EcoNuts in warm vs cold water, and the fact that they aren't great for large loads.
